The Genius of Jacob Collier
Today, let's talk about an extremely unique and talented performer that until recently, I was only vaguely familiar with his name.
But in the last few weeks, I came across a short reel of this performer in concert on social media and I was so impressed that I went out looking for more. If you are a performer and have not previously heard of Jacob Collier, I highly suggest you go look him up. His performances influenced me so much that I felt compelled to talk about him today.
A Performance Like No Other
As a musician who's been around for a while, I've always admired artists who push the boundaries of what's possible in music. Jacob Collier, in my humble opinion, is a true musical genius. He takes the ordinary and transforms it into something amazing, creating a new kind of experience.
While he is very impressive as a musician and writer, what sets Jacob apart for me is his ability to do amazing things in a live setting.
Turning His Audience into His Choir
Now if you have been paying attention to Danny Robertson Music for any period of time, you know how strongly I believe in the intimate connection that needs to be made between the performer and the audience. Jacob Collier does this better than most. He found a way to let his audience become the performer. Believe me when I say that this is nothing short of magical.
Imagine this: you're watching a concert, and suddenly the performer has your section start to sing one note. Then another sings a different note. Then another. Soon, the entire audience is singing in harmony like a choir! Everyone is even following the performer (now acting like the choir director) through all of the changes. It's an incredible shared journey that transcends the typical performer-spectator dynamic that we all see in most situations.
In all of my years of performing, I've never seen anything quite like it and frankly, I am hoping to try this myself at a gig sometime soon!
Jacob Collier is beyond impressive in orchestrating this impromptu choir. He guides the audience to sing different tones and harmonies, creating this collaborative masterpiece right on the spot. It's not just about creating the music; it's about creating a moment – a shared memory for everyone there who is lucky enough to be a part of it.
Final Thoughts
Jacob Collier reminded me that music is a universal language that is meant to be shared, experienced, and celebrated together. I challenge you to try being as daring and creative as this amazing young man!
Thanks for reading and watching.
