🎺 Am I Good Enough To Perform Live?

🎺 Am I Good Enough To Perform Live?

Today, I want to address a common concern I get from a lot of aspiring and non-performing musicians - that nagging doubt of whether they are good enough to perform live. As someone who has been rocking stages at weddings, corporate events, and clubs for years, I've faced similar fears and uncertainties and even know some seasoned veterans who are amazing and still worry about whether they are good enough. Let's dive into why you are more than ready to jump into the spotlight.

Let's Address the Elephant in the Room

I often receive questions from beginners grappling with playing instruments, singing, or understanding music theory. It's natural to doubt your abilities, but here's the deal - confidence is key. Don't let these worries hold you back. I've been there, and I get it. The stage is a place for growth, not perfection. You've got what it takes, trust me.

Let me share a bit of my journey. Years ago, I had to play a tricky part in a Jackson 5 tune that was a struggle for me even when I was on stage in front of others. My fingers weren't very nimble at that point, probably still not much better today. But here's the takeaway: we performed the song anyway, and it became one of the favorite for our band to play and our fans to hear.

My point? Don't wait until you're ready. Don't wait until you're "perfect." Embrace the imperfections and grow through the experience. You'll surprise yourself.

The truth is, we all learn by doing. Music theory, soloing, and working within the context of a band are all skills that get honed in the heat of live performance. Waiting until you feel entirely ready means missing out on valuable lessons that only real-world gigs can offer.

Get Out There and Go For It

If you want to learn quickly, here's a bold move - go out and book a gig that you perform within the next 30 to 60 days. Having a set date on your calendar will light a fire under you like nothing else. I've been in a band that did just that, and it pushed us to grow and deliver... quickly. Like cramming for a test, it's amazing how much you can learn when you have no other choice.

Alternatively, for a more forgiving start, another healthy way to get started performing live is to consider joining a church or worship band. That's where I got my feet wet, and the supportive environment allows you to build confidence without the pressure of perfection.

Final Thoughts

Look, mistakes are part of the gig, and you're allowed to make them. Every performer, even the greats, had to start somewhere. So, whether you dream of big concerts, intimate club performances, or church gigs, put yourself out there. You can do this. The only way to know if you're ready is to hit that stage. It's not reserved for the perfect; it's for those willing to embrace the journey. Your unique sound, your style, and your growth as a performer will resonate with audiences. So, believe in yourself, go out there, and make some music magic. Your first gig is just the beginning of an incredible journey.

Thanks for reading and watching.
