Songs Under the Sun: The Joy Of Performing Outside
For about a decade, one of my favorite gigs to play every year was this summer show at a local outdoor mall. Our band was regularly the closing act of the season in late August or early September and we always saw a pretty good crowd (I would guess around a thousand people). Families would come and dance and have a great time.
Many of my experiences playing outdoor gigs are like this. Just check out this one I played last month at a wedding on a lake.
When it comes to making music, the world becomes your stage. While traditional concert halls have their charm, there's something magical about performing music in the great outdoors. Whether it's the natural ambiance, scenic landscapes, or just the fresh air, playing music outside can be a thrilling experience. Performing music outdoors can be a lot of fun and it might just be the perfect stage for your melodic talents.
There are Great Benefits to Playing the Occasional Outdoor Show
-
Embrace the Elements
Performing music outdoors allows you to connect with nature and experience the elements firsthand. Picture yourself strumming a guitar by the beach, serenading the rustling leaves in a park, or creating melodies amidst the majestic mountains. The sights, sounds, and scents of the natural world become part of your performance, enhancing the musical experience for you and your audience. -
Feel the Freedom
Outdoor settings provide you with a larger canvas to express yourself. Unlike confined indoor spaces, performing music outdoors gives you the freedom to move, dance, and interact with the audience. Let your music take flight as you bask in the open space and seize the opportunity to create a unique, unforgettable performance. -
A Symphony of Surroundings
When you perform music outdoors, the surroundings become an integral part of the show. Imagine playing your heart out against the backdrop of a picturesque sunset or beneath a sky full of stars. The scenic beauty can elevate your artistic experience, making each note resonate with a touch of nature. -
Festivals and Community Bonding
Many outdoor music performances are part of community events or festivals. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with a diverse audience, fosters new connections, inspires collaborations, and expands your musical horizons. -
Adventure and Surprise
Outdoor performances offer a touch of adventure and surprise. Street performances, known as busking, allow you to showcase your talents directly to the public, forging an instant connection with any passersby. Spontaneous performances or impromptu jam sessions can add an element of excitement, as you never know who might join in or how the audience might respond. -
Soak in the Sun
The warmth of sunlight can do wonders for your performance. Playing music under the sun not only boosts your energy levels but also can enhance the overall ambiance. The combination of beautiful tunes and a sun-kissed atmosphere creates a vibrant and uplifting experience for both musicians and listeners alike. -
Engage your Senses
Outdoor performances engage all your senses. The gentle breeze, the scent of blooming flowers in the air, and the natural acoustics provide a unique auditory experience. By immersing yourself in this sensory feast, you can create music that resonates not only in the ears but also in the hearts of your audience. -
Unforgettable Memories
My favorite part. Performing music outdoors often leads to cherished memories. The unique atmosphere of an outdoor concert can stay etched in your mind long after the performance ends. The joy of sharing your music with others in a beautiful outdoor setting creates lasting moments that you'll treasure for years to come.
Final Thoughts
Performing music outdoors is a remarkable experience that can open you up to a world of possibilities. From the freedom to express yourself to the scenic beauty that surrounds you, outdoor performances offer a unique and unforgettable stage for your musical talents. Grab your instrument, step outside, and let yourself get in harmony with nature!
